Project Kilat

I’m doing a research on the leader of Cebu’s revolution against the Spaniards in 1898 for a project that’s under wraps for now. Might need your help. You can give me the juiciest, oddest, most outrageous, most intriguing trivia you know of this underrated hero and his soldiers.

Did you know that he and the rest of the Cebu Katipuneros shouldn’t be touched by women lest their anting-antings lose their power? Something like that. If you can include your source, so much the better.

Email your trivia at insoymada@gmail.com or drop it here as comment. A round of Red Horse is all I can offer you in return. Mabuhay ang Rebolusyon!

@clado, peert, rei: red horse pud unya ta ha. kilat or no kilat. 🙂

  6. I’ve read “Leon Kilat and Cebu’s Revolution”. I’m deeply touched at the part where Leon Kilat (Pantaleon Villegas) was betrayed and killed by Apolinario Alcuitas.

Alcuitas even announced: “Mga kaigsoonan, ipahibalo ko kaninyo nga karong gabhiona, may ihawon akong kabayo.”

This line: “Ibutang una ninyo. Atong sulayan, ambi tuod dili ba dutlan” described a gruesome scene. They took turns at stabbing the dead body of Leon Kilat and breaking some of his limbs to see if he was really invulnerable.

Leon Kilat is one of the heros I’m proud of. I’m glad you initiate this “Project Kilat”. I believe there are still many other interesting things we should know about him.

Cebuanos must be proud for having many heroes. Cebu streets are named after them but I have doubts if the young generation know the “meaning”, the story behind each street names.

  7. the exact spot where the first skirmish between spanish soldiers and Kilat’s katipuneros took place on April 3 1898 was where gipareglahan ko sometime in 1995. i lived in the san nicolas area that time. naglakaw ko mga 2 am from a party at a friend’s house when somebody hit me with a hard object in the head. nakadagan ko’g gamay before ko natumba ug nakuyapan.

naulian ko after a few seconds. nagkadugo kog maayo. akong tshirt nga puti puwa na. i took a cab to the hospital para ipatahi ang dako kaayo nga samad sa akong ulo. wa ko kaklaro sa ningbira because it was dark and it happened so fast. but i remember him walking casually after the attack.

It was only three days after the incident that the whole experience sank in. I cried like a baby. hagulhol gyud. what if it was a gun? shit!

But this has nothing to do with “Project Kilat” though.

  8. @bai clarence:

  11. “i lived in the san nicolas area that time. naglakaw ko mga 2 am from a party at a friend’s house ”
    – hehehe..party peep sd diay si sir 😆

  12. I’m just curious, were “anting-anting” (amulets? talisman?) really did help the Cebuano Katipuneros? Or carrying such things just boost their confidence to fight.

I remember a friend in college who told me about “anting-anting” to win a girl’s heart. He swore, “anting-anting” really works. Another one, he said was used to protect him from enemies. In “fact” it was used by his Lolo who “also fought against Spaniards”. I doubt the authenticity of his story though.

Has someone preserved the “anting-antings” used by Kilat Katipuneros? I hope to see one.

  13. Andres Abellana was quoted saying:

“Ako, nakakita gayud. Moasdang siya sa mga kaaway bisan naghadyong ang mga bala. Makuli nga maigo ug kon maigo man gani, maorag dili siya dutlan kay mamapha lang ug dili maunsa.”

Gamhanan gyod diay si Leon Kilat?

  14. batang buotan, i think we’re reading the same source. 🙂 got me more interested in Kilat.

  15. “Has someone preserved the “anting-antings” used by Kilat Katipuneros? I hope to see one.”
    – maau kung mabutang na siya sa tukurong museum sa kagahapon.

  16. my hometown carcar has his statue on the plaza, riding his horse. its a great shame for us all carcaranons, to have blood on our ancestors hands.

  17. […] inspire another Cebuano writer, Lorenzo Niñal to do a research about Leon Kilat. He is more interested to know the juiciest, oddest, most outrageous, most intriguing trivia […] about Leon Kilat and his […]

The officer that carried out the order….Macapagal. Mao diay’ng maayong pagkaliwat ning atong duwende.

  19. @JoRed: and she wants to stay on after 2010 and beyond. makes sense to go red.
